At Envision, we believe every individual deserves the opportunity to build confidence, develop meaningful relationships, and thrive in their community. Through personalized, person-centered care, Envision’s Mental Health Services empower individuals to overcome challenges, reach personal goals, and discover new possibilities. Hannah’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when compassionate support, community partnerships, and perseverance come together.
When Hannah first began receiving services through Envision’s Mental Health Services, social anxiety made even simple interactions feel overwhelming. Meeting new people, speaking in unfamiliar settings, and participating in community activities often caused significant stress, limiting her ability to fully engage with others.
As part of her long-term goal of obtaining meaningful employment, Hannah’s therapist, Dr. Pena-Kumpf, introduced her to a volunteer opportunity at the front desk of the YMCA. While the role offered valuable experience, it also placed Hannah well outside of her comfort zone. At first, she often questioned whether she could attend and struggled to greet members as they entered the building. Even saying “Good morning” required gentle encouragement and consistent support.
Working alongside Ayrianna Wilkerson, her Qualified Mental Health Specialist, Hannah approached each day one small step at a time. Together, they practiced greeting visitors, making eye contact, speaking more confidently, and gradually expanding conversations. As Hannah became more comfortable, she began adding a cheerful “Goodbye” as members left, further strengthening her communication skills and confidence.
An important part of Hannah’s success was the welcoming environment created by the YMCA team, especially Community Executive Director Lia Meyers. From the beginning, Lia fostered an atmosphere of encouragement, kindness, and acceptance that helped Hannah feel safe enough to challenge herself. Having supportive people around her made it easier to replace fear with confidence.
Today, Hannah’s transformation is remarkable. She now greets YMCA members independently without prompts, demonstrating confidence that once seemed impossible. Her progress has been so significant that when the possibility of employment at the YMCA—or in a similar customer-facing role—was discussed, both her Service and Support Administrator and her mother were amazed. As her mother shared, “This sounds like a totally different person.”
Hannah’s growth reaches far beyond volunteering. She has become more comfortable expressing her preferences, advocating for herself, and making decisions independently. After each volunteer shift, she eagerly enjoys a routine she helped create, often choosing a trip to the dollar store and confidently communicating her plans while adapting when needed. These everyday moments reflect meaningful growth in self-confidence, problem-solving, and independence.
Hannah’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration. Through the combined support of Envision’s Mental Health Services, Dr. Pena-Kumpf, Ayrianna Wilkerson, the YMCA staff, and Hannah’s own determination, she has moved from uncertainty to confidence and from hesitation to meaningful community engagement.
Her journey reminds us that personal growth doesn’t happen overnight—but with the right support, encouragement, and opportunities, extraordinary transformation is possible.
