This spring, families gathered on Envision’s campus for a special series of hands-on cooking classes led by CITE Services staff. Designed to build practical life skills while fostering connection, the Cooking 101 series brought participants together to learn, collaborate, and, of course, enjoy delicious meals.
From the very first session, the focus was on creating a safe and welcoming kitchen environment. Participants began by learning essential kitchen safety and hygiene practices—an important foundation for any aspiring cook. From there, they explored how to read and use measuring cups and spoons, putting their new skills into action by preparing a fun and customizable trail mix filled with a variety of tasty ingredients.
As the series progressed, so did the participants’ confidence. In the second class, families were introduced to essential kitchen tools such as vegetable peelers and knives. They also learned how to safely operate the oven. Working together, the group prepared a flavorful sheet-pan dinner featuring chicken sausage and roasted vegetables. The inviting aroma filling the kitchen was a shared reminder of their growing skills and teamwork.
The final class served as both a celebration and a culmination of everything learned. Participants rotated through workstations, practicing collaboration and independence while using multiple cooking methods, including the stovetop, toaster oven, and air fryer. Together, they prepared a complete meal of spaghetti and meatballs, fresh salad, and Texas toast. The evening concluded with a meaningful moment as the students served dinner to their families, sitting down to share the meal together, family-style. It was a joyful and memorable night for everyone involved.
While the young chefs were busy in the kitchen, their parents participated in complementary sessions at the Envision Training Center. These classes reinforced and expanded on the skills their children were developing, offering practical strategies for home implementation. Topics included creating visual supports for kitchen safety, promoting safe knife use, strengthening hand coordination, and encouraging positive family communication during mealtimes. Parents also explored ways to gradually expand the variety of foods their children are willing to try.
This impactful program was made possible through the generous support of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation’s Learning Links grant. Thanks to this partnership, CITE Services was able to provide families with meaningful learning experiences that extend well beyond the classroom.
CITE looks forward to offering more opportunities like this in the future—continuing to empower families, build confidence, and strengthen connections through shared experiences.
