IN ACTION
Sophie describes the experience of having autism this way: “My brain sometimes just doesn’t work right.” Nevertheless, she does a pretty good job of holding down a part-time job; living in her own apartment; caring for her beloved dog, Cleo; riding horses occasionally; and playing her favorite video game, Star Stable.
Juggling a variety of roles, responsibilities and activities can be stressful for anyone, but having autism heightens the feelings of anxiety and frustration. That’s why counseling sessions at Envision have been beneficial to Sophie. Counselor Carissa Blatz has been helping her express her emotions in appropriate ways. Sophie’s mom, Elaine, has noticed a difference. “There’s been a big change in Sophie’s ability to avoid extreme swings in behaviors and that has improved her relationships with others,” she said.
